Rising demand for data processing and storage is fueling a wave of new data center construction, infrastructure investments and capacity expansions across the United States. According to Statista, data center revenue is expected to show an annual growth rate (CAGR 2025-2030) of 6.98%, resulting in a market volume of $739 billion by 2030.
In response to this growth, skilled manufacturers like UPG are being called on to deliver integrated solutions for data centers; from hard drive enclosures and blanks to rack-mounted video console units.
As a single-source supplier of high-volume precision injection molding and value-added assemblies, UPG has a proud 70+ year history of engineering some of the most complex injection molded products in the world. Based in Houston, Texas, UPG has additional facilities in Suzhou, China, and Cardiff, Wales, to meet global customer demands.
UPG’s History with Data Centers
As data centers evolve toward smaller, more powerful designs, UPG applies its deep expertise in plastic injection molding to achieve the tight tolerances and complex geometries these components demand. More than 25 years ago, UPG began developing high-performance data center solutions under the UPtyma imprint: a UPG brand of IT infrastructure hardware engineered to enhance efficiency, maximize uptime and simplify usability.
By integrating UPtyma with UPG’s manufacturing capabilities, the brand is positioned to deliver high-quality components and customized, customer-driven engineering solutions. With rapid prototyping, fast ramp-up and end-to-end production capabilities, UPG accelerates time-to-market while ensuring reliability at every step.
UPG utilizes its expertise to solve challenges for customers across the data center industry, providing:
- Reduced supplier complexity: Original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) often rely on multiple vendors for plastic components, sheet-metal parts and printed circuit assemblies (PCAs). UPG’s single-source model eliminates multi-supplier coordination challenges, reducing delays and quality mismatches.
- Faster time-to-market: Integrated design, tooling and assembly allow projects to move from concept to production more quickly – a critical advantage in a competitive data center hardware market.
- Improved reliability and certification confidence: UPG’s combined mechanical, electronic and materials engineering ensures end-products meet global compliance requirements (e.g., UL, CSA) with fewer design iterations.
- Lower total cost of ownership: By optimizing material selection, tooling strategies and assembly processes under one roof, UPG helps reduce scrap, labor and logistics costs.
- Scalable global production: Facilities in the U.S., China and Wales allow OEMs to source high-quality components close to their final assembly or deployment regions.
Today, UPG’s integrated solution combines plastics and metal manufacturing to reinforce its reputation as a collaborative partner to OEMs in high-growth industries.
An Integrated Solution to Meet Data Center Demand
As more corporations and enterprises rely on data-driven solutions for round-the-clock reliability, a leading data center OEM needed a solution that would meet stringent reliability requirements. This customer called on UPG to create a rack-mounted KVM (keyboard, video monitor and mouse) solution, providing UPG the opportunity to act as an integrated solutions partner combining multiple manufacturing capabilities to bring the product to life. UPG needed to deliver a turnkey design that integrated multiple disciplines – plastics, precision sheet metal and PCAs.
UPG served as the full-system design partner, taking the product from concept through production. The team designed the injection-molded plastics, sheet metal chassis and integrated PCAs to ensure mechanical and electronic performance. UPG also used rigorous functional testing to ensure the product could withstand application demands.
The brand selected high-strength engineered plastics for the front bezels and housings, precision-formed sheet metal for the rack-mount frame, and custom PCAs designed for long-term reliability and streamlined assembly. Leveraging its expertise in precision injection molds, progressive sheet-metal tooling and PCB assembly fixtures, UPG delivered a fully integrated, production-ready solution. The final unit met international safety standards, achieving UL and CSA certification.
“Projects like this highlight how early collaboration and cross-disciplinary expertise can directly impact product performance and speed to market,” said Luis Gomez, Group President of UPG. “By aligning our engineering, materials selection and manufacturing teams from the outset, we helped the customer navigate complex reliability requirements while streamlining the path from design validation to full-scale production.”
